Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Relaxation
You arrive at Kigali International Airport (KGL), where your guide meets you warmly. Transfer directly to your booked accommodation in the city or near the airport. Check into your room, take time to settle in, and have dinner at your leisure. Prepare for an early start the next day as you begin your journey across Rwanda.
Day 2: Transfer East to Akagera National Park
You wake up and have breakfast before your guide drives you east toward Akagera National Park. This journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. You pass through beautiful Rwandan countryside, watching the scenery transition from the rolling hills of the central region to the lower-lying savanna landscapes of the east. Upon arrival, you check into your lodge, have lunch, and potentially take a short afternoon game drive to begin your wildlife spotting. You enjoy dinner and spend your first night in the wilderness.
Day 3: Big Five Game Drive and Lake Ihema Boat Safari
Rise before the sun for an exhilarating morning game drive. You actively search for the Big Five mammals whicn include lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffaloes—which roam the restored park. Witness the conservation success story first-hand, knowing that the reintroduction of lions and rhinos since 2010, driven by the work of African Parks, has restored** the ecosystem to its natural state, now harboring over 8,000 large mammals.
If you wish, you can participate in a special behind-the-scenes experience with the park rangers at the visitor center to learn more about this success. In the afternoon, you embark on a boat safari on Lake Ihema. This cruise takes you across one of Central Africa’s protected wetlands. You look out for Nile crocodiles and large pods of hippos, and you spot diverse birdlife, with over 500 species known to inhabit this area. You return to the lodge at sunset, have dinner, and reflect on your wildlife sightings.
Day 4: Journey West to Volcanoes National Park
You have breakfast and depart from Akagera, heading west across the country. Your guide drives you via the capital city of Kigali, where you stop for a well-deserved lunch. You then continue your scenic transfer north to the Virunga mountains, the location of Volcanoes National Park (VNP). The journey allows you to experience the dramatic geographical changes of Rwanda. You arrive at your accommodation near VNP, check in, have dinner, and prepare your trekking gear.
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking and Cultural Visit
Wake up early,eat breakfast, and transfer to the VNP park headquarters in Kinigi. Attend the mandatory briefing by the park rangers. You then join your assigned group and begin the trek into the misty forest. You follow the expert trackers through the dense terrain, and when the family is located, you spend one unforgettable hour observing the gorillas.
After this profound experience, you hike back out and return to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you visit the Gorilla Guardian’s Village. You engage with the community, learn about the traditional cultural practices, and support the local people who are instrumental in gorilla conservation. You return to the lodge for your final dinner in the mountains.
Day 6: Departure
You have your final breakfast in Rwanda. Your guide transfers you back to Kigali International Airport (KGL), or your preferred drop-off location, depending on your flight schedule. You conclude your comprehensive 6-day Rwanda safari, carrying incredible memories of both the Big Five and the mountain gorillas.
