Itinerary
Day 1: Journey to the Primate Capital
You begin your epic adventure, departing from either Kampala or Entebbe International Airport. Your driver navigates the five-to-six-hour drive, heading west toward Kibale National Park. En route, you travel through Mubende. If you wish, take a brief detour to visit the ancient Nakayima Tree, which is believed to be over 400 years old. Here, you learn about the mystical Bachwezi Empire, as this tree served as a shrine for their spirits. Then proceed through Fort Portal, admiring the emerald-green tea plantations that carpet the hillsides. You finally reach your lodge in Kibale, have dinner, and settle in for the night.
Day 2: Tracking Chimpanzees and Exploring Bigodi Swamp
Prepare for an early start, as the chimpanzee tracking requires strict adherence to the schedule. You report to the Kanyanchu briefing center precisely at 7:00 am. After receiving instructions, you join your guides and venture into the dense forest. Since Kibale’s altitude ranges between 900 and 1,590 meters above sea level, you find the trekking challenging due to the nature of terrain. During the morning session, the chimpanzees are highly active, giving you a greater chance to spot them playing high in the trees. Once located, you spend one dedicated hour observing their complex social behavior. Then return to the center, where officials award you a certificate, and enjoy lunch back at the lodge.
In the cool early evening, you embark on a nature walk in the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This sanctuary hosts eight of Kibale’s thirteen primate species, giving you excellent opportunities to spot various monkeys and over 200 species of birds and local medicinal plants. The walk typically lasts two to three hours. Alternatively, you choose to engage with the local community, perhaps by visiting a traditional healer to discover their stunning metaphysics, stopping at a school, or meeting women at a weaving cooperative. You return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Boat Safari on the Kazinga Channel
You leave Kibale and make the short, two-hour drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Upon arrival, head directly to the Kazinga Channel for the signature boat safari. The channel stretches for 32 kilometers, connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. During the three-hour cruise, you witness vast numbers of hippos, observe large herds of elephants and buffaloes coming to drink, and see mighty Nile crocodiles basking on the banks. The park boasts over 600 bird species, many of which you spot here. Note that the channel has two sides: the Katunguru side, where local community members operate smaller boats, and the Mweya Peninsula side, known for its large, double-decked vessels. The Katunguru side is ideal for viewing elephants, buffaloes, and hippos, while Mweya provides the best views of birds and Nile crocodiles. Later, you transfer to your lodge for dinner and overnight accommodation.
Day 4: Tree-Climbing Lions and Transfer to Bwindi
You start your day with an early morning game drive within Queen Elizabeth National Park. After the drive, you have breakfast and depart by 9:00 am. The route winds through the Ishasha wilderness, the park’s southern sector, which is famous for harboring the unique tree-climbing lions. You scan the fig trees as you pass through. With some luck you could catch a glimpse of these majestic cats resting on the branches. You continue your transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reach your specific sector, which depends on your pre-booked gorilla permit. Then check into your lodge, have dinner, and prepare for the big day.
Day 5: Encounter with the Gentle Giants
You set your alarm for 6:00 am to ensure you are ready for the day’s great adventure. You attend the mandatory briefing at the park headquarters between 7:00 am and 7:30 am. Park staff allocate you to a specific gorilla family based on your physical hiking abilities. Regarding the time the trek might last to locate the gorillas is unpredictable. Potentially lasting anywhere from one to five hours. Once the family is located, you receive one precious hour to spend in the presence of the gentle giants. Afterward, you are awarded your official trekking certificate and return to the lodge for lunch. You relax for the rest of the day. Or go out for an evening village walk before dinner. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 6: Safari to Lake Mburo National Park
You transfer from Bwindi to Lake Mburo National Park, a journey that takes approximately four hours. This park is strategically located closer to Entebbe Airport, making it a perfect final stop. You check into your lodge. Lake Mburo offers a unique walking safari experience. Here, you can walk among herds of giraffes, zebras, impalas, Uganda Kobs, elands, and waterbucks. You notice that the park is surrounded by communities who raise the graceful Ankole longhorn cattle, which you see grazing nearby. You relax for the rest of the afternoon, have dinner, and stay overnight.
Day 7: Walking Safari and Departure
You take the final activity of the trip – the walking safari – provided your flight schedule permits. If your flight departs in the afternoon or evening, you embark on the morning walk to witness the wildlife up close. If your departure is midday, you skip the activity. You enjoy breakfast at the lodge and then begin the drive to Entebbe International Airport or Kampala, where you connect with your international flight, concluding your seven-day Uganda adventure.
