Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to the Mountain Base
You arrive in Kigali, the starting point of your adventure. You meet your guide and quickly depart from the capital, heading north toward Volcanoes National Park (VNP). If you opt for a city tour, you enjoy it before or after this main transfer. You watch the stunning scenery unfold during the journey, as you pass through the famous terraced hillsides of Rwanda. This two-to-three-hour drive brings you to your lodge near the Virunga Mountains. You check into your accommodation, enjoy dinner, and mentally prepare yourself for the encounter with the mountain gorillas the following morning.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Cultural Exchange
You wake early and eat breakfast, eager for the day’s main event. You travel to the VNP headquarters in Kinigi and attend the essential briefing session. Park officials assign you to a gorilla family, and you receive crucial instructions from your rangers. You then venture into the dense forest, following your trackers as they navigate the mountainous terrain. When you find the gorilla family, you spend one extraordinary hour observing their behaviors, taking in the profound experience of their presence. After you return from the trek, you have lunch back at the lodge. In the afternoon, you visit the local Gorilla Guardian’s Village. Here, you take part in traditional cultural activities, learn about the local heritage, and engage with the community, fulfilling the purpose of giving back to the people who share their land with the gorillas. You return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Optional Activity and Departure
You have breakfast, knowing your tour nears its conclusion. You choose an optional activity before transferring back to Kigali: you can embark on an exciting Golden Monkey tracking trek, which offers a lively experience with these playful primates, or you can undertake the historically significant hike to the final resting place of Dian Fossey. If you select the Dian Fossey option, you also visit the nearby Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla.
